Located in the heart of the port town of Wick, the Pulteney distillery takes its name from the district where it was founded in 1826. It produces a single malt whose salty and iodine character has earned it the nicknames "The Maritime Malt" and "Manzanilla of the North." A curiosity in the world of whisky, its distillery is equipped with a wash still whose swan neck has been cut so that it can fit into the distillation room. A perfect embodiment of the "coastal" style that so characterizes the single malts of the Northern Highlands, this version navigates, note by note, poetically between land and sea.
Nose : Rich, deep. Salty and herbaceous (glasswort lichen), the first nose immediately takes us to the seaside. Magnificent aromas of beeswax, alfalfa, and clover then blend harmoniously. At this point, the aromatic palette flirts with peat.
Appearance : Pale gold.
Palate : Lively and full-bodied. Fleur de sel showers down on the taste buds in a medicinal (bandage) opening. Refreshed by the tangy juice of several citrus fruits, the mid-palate stretches into more milky (coconut) and floral (lavender) flavors.
Finish : Long, dense. Chalky and marine, the start of the finish sways to the rhythm of the waves crashing onto the shore. Vanilla and fruity (pear, apple), the finish is gradually infused with the ashy flavors of a burning cigar.
